Nigeria records 4 new Coronavirus cases in Osun, Ogun

Nigeria has recorded four new coronavirus cases in Osun and Ogun States, bringing the total national figure to 135 cases.

According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, “Four new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Nigeria; 3 in Osun and 1 in Ogun/

“As at 11:15 am 31st March, there are 135 confirmed cases of #COVID-19 reported in Nigeria with 2 deaths.”

On Monday, 20 new cases were recorded in Nigeria, with Lagos having 13 cases.

WHO shocker: Masks can cause infection, not coronavirus proof

The World Health Organisation, WHO has dropped a shocker to people wearing masks as protection against coronavirus.

It said masks do not offer protection against coronavirus.

In its latest update about the virus which has sickened close to 800,000 people worldwide and killed 38,000, WHO said emphatically that people who are healthy should not wear masks.

It warns that masks used improperly can be a source of infection.

Nigeria records fresh new cases of COVID-19 as 20 people test positive to the virus

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced that the confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease in Nigerian has risen from 111 to 131.

A breakdown of the new 20 cases indicated: 13 in Lagos, 4 in FCT, 2 in Kaduna and 1 in Oyo State.

In total, Lagos now has Lagos- 81 confirmed cases; FCT- 25; Ogun- 3; Enugu- 2; Ekiti- 1; Oyo- 8; Edo- 2; Bauchi- 2; Osun-2; Rivers-1; Benue- 1; and Kaduna- 3.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday during his national address on the COVID-19 pandemic ordered the restriction of movements in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states.
While Abuja and Lagos prepare to enact the order of the lockdown, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun announced that the total lockdown of the state which was scheduled to commence today (Monday by 11pm) has been shifted till Friday this week.

Oyo goes tough on social distance offenders as taskforce impounds 22 vehicles (photos)

The Oyo State COVID-19 Security and Enforcement sub-committee has impounded a total of Twenty-Two (22) illegally parked vehicles during its special night operations, to enforce compliance at clubhouses and public places in Ibadan.

While addressing the team of officers before the operation, the Executive Chairman, OYRTMA, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, who distributed protective tools to the officers such as hand gloves, portable sanitisers, nose masks, and thermometers, charged them to be professional in the exercise and respect fundamental human rights in the course of the operation.

NCDC confirms 14 new cases of coronavirus

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 14 new cases of coronavirus.

The latest update released at 9.30 pm Sunday brings the total number of cases across the federation 111 with one death. “Fourteen new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria; 9 in Lagos and 5 in FCT As at 09:30 pm 29th March there are 111 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria with 1 death.

300 people die in Iran drinking methanol in mistaken belief it cures coronavirus

The death toll from alcohol poisoning in Iran has risen to 300 after people started to consume methanol because of a rumour that high proof alcohol could cure the coronavirus. 

Iranian media reports that more than 1,000 have been sickened so far by ingesting methanol across the Islamic Republic, where drinking alcohol is banned and where those who do rely on bootleggers.

It comes as Tehran announced 144 new deaths from coronavirus on Friday, bringing its death toll to 2,378, and another 2,926 new confirmed cases, with a total of more than 32,300 infected.

There have been a spate of fake remedies spreading across social media in Iran, where people remain deeply suspicious of the government after it downplayed the crisis for days before it overwhelmed the country.

Fellow Nigerians,

From the first signs that Coronavirus, or COVID-19 was turning into an epidemic and was officially declared a world-wide emergency, the Federal Government started planning preventive, containment and curative measures in the event the disease hits Nigeria.

The whole instruments of government are now mobilized to confront what has now become both a health emergency and an economic crisis.

Tinubu donates N200m to coronavirus fight

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress yesterday announced a donation of N200m to support the efforts at curtailing the novel Coronavirus disease.

A N100m of the donation would be donated to the Lagos State Government; while the remaining N100m would go to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Tinubu said.

The former governor, who clocked 68 yesterday, also commended the residents of the state for observing social distancing and other measures advised by the government to help in nipping the virus in the bud.

In a statement he personally signed, Tinubu said his annual colloquium was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic which requires some level of social distancing and avoiding large gatherings.

A man has allegedly stabbed his pregnant wife to death two months after their wedding in Anambra.

 Rita Onyemauchechukwu Onyebuchi and her husband  Mr Ikechukwu popularly called "Agbada", both from Anambra state, got married on January 10, 2020.


The deceased younger brother,  Onyebuchi John Paul stopped by his sister's house on his way to work and saw a crowd, including police officers, gathered in the compound.

 He was led into the house where he saw the decomposing body of his sister lying in a pool of her own blood.

Ibadan UCH Chief Medical Doctor tests positive for Coronavirus

Prof Jesse A. Otegbayo, the chief medical doctor, University College Hospital, Ibadan UCH has tested positive for coronavirus.

This was disclosed on Sunday morning in a statement signed by the CMD himself.

The statement reads: “On Monday 23rd March, we commenced a 12man quarterly board meeting which was meant to last 5 days in the hospital, we observed social distancing and other precautionary measures for covid-19 as much as possible.

“However, on Wednesday morning, one of us presented with what appeared to be symptoms of covid-19, his samples were immediately taken for test and the meeting called off.

Nigeria cases jump to 81 as NCDC confirms 11 new cases

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed eleven new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Eight new cases were confirmed in Lagos, two in Enugu state and one in Edo state

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 81.

According to the NCDC, “11 new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria: 8 in Lagos, 2 in Enugu & 1 in Edo State, As at 11:55pm 27th March, there are 81 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. 3 have been discharged with 1 death.”

Davido’s fiancee, Chioma tests positive for Coronavirus

Chioma, the fiancee of Nigerian pop star, Davido, has tested positive for Coronavirus.

Davido disclosed this on Friday on his Instagram page.

He wrote: “Hey everyone ! I came back recently from America after cancelling tour. My fiancé Chioma also came back from London recently with our baby.

“We had no symptoms and still both feel perfectly fine but because of our recent travel history we decided to take ourselves and our all close associates we’ve come in recent contact with for the COVID-19 test on the 25th of March.

Lagos University Teaching Hospital sends away man who tested positive for coronavirus over lack of bed space

A man named Emmanuel Benson, who had close contact with two persons that recently arrived Lagos from the United Kingdom, has been told to go home by medical personnel at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, after testing positive for Coronavirus.

Benson, who had hoped to be quarantined and treated at LUTH after being tested at the government-owned hospital on March 21, was asked to go back home over lack of bed space to admit him at the facility.

SaharaReporters gathered that since the refusal of LUTH to admit Benson, he had returned home and continued his normal life.

Nigeria confirms 14 new coronavirus cases - raising total to 65

Nigeria has confirmed 14 new cases of coronavirus. The announcement Thursday night by the National Centre for Disease Control takes the total number of confirmed cases to 65.

It is the highest number of cases confirmed so far by the body in a single day.

“14 new cases of #COVID19 have been confirmed in Nigeria: 2 in FCT, 12 in Lagos,” NCDC tweeted at 8.35P.M.


“Of the 14, 6 were detected on a vessel, 3 are returning travellers into Nigeria & 1 is close contact of a confirmed case

Federal government to ban interstate, intertown travels

The Federal Government has announced plans to stop interstate and intertown travels as another strategy towards stopping the spread of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The announcement, which was made Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, according to a tweet by Personal Assistant on New Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad.

The tweet read: “BREAKING: The Federal Government announces plans to ban inter-state travel and possibly close down all motor parks as part of measures to curtail the spread of the #Coronavirus, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed discloses the plans this afternoon. #COVID19Nigeria”

Just In: Six coronavirus patients to be discharged in Lagos

The Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Tunde Ajayi, has disclosed that six of the patients at the Infectious Disease Hospital have recovered.

Ajayi via his twitter handle, @thetundeajai, said the patients would be discharged soon.

“Six of our #COVID19 inpatients have recovered and will be discharged soon. There is something Lagos is doing right. Lagos takes the lead,” he wrote.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, 51 cases were confirmed in the country as of 11:25 pm on March 25.

Nollywood actor, Alkali Mathew dies on set

Nollywood actor, Alkali Matthew, popularly known as Dareng of the African Magic series “Halita”, has died on set.

Matthew reportedly died on the 24th of March 2020, while filming on a movie set. The main cause of his death is yet to be revealed.

More men than women appear to be dying from coronavirus

Smoking, drinking, general poor health: Researchers say these are some of the factors that could explain why more men seem to be dying from coronavirus than women.

In countries such as Italy, men represent nearly 60% of people who tested positive for the virus and more than 70% of those who have died, according to the country’s National Health Institute (ISS). Even in countries like South Korea, where the proportion of women who have tested positive for the virus is higher than that of men, about 54% of the reported deaths are among men.

Nigeria confirms five new coronavirus cases, first in Rivers

How Davido is coping with self-isolation

Davido has revealed how he is struggling to cope with self-isolation following the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria.

David Adeleke had to self-isolate after he attended a show with more than 50 people in the ancient city of Ibadan on March 21, Saturday, despite warnings by federal and state governments to Nigerians to avoid social gatherings and observe social distancing.

Police inspector kills couple, commits suicide in Imo

A police inspector, Kenneth Enamika, has committed suicide after killing a couple, Cajethan and Oluchi Aputanze, in Mgbidi, Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, told Punch  correspondents on Tuesday that the cop dropped a note before killing the couple and himself.

Ikeokwu said the inspector stated that Oluchi had promised to marry him after collecting N150,000 from him, a pledge she allegedly failed to fulfil.

The police spokesperson said, “On March 22, 2020, one Alloy Eze of Ozoara, Mgbidi, Oru West LGA, Imo State, reported to the Oru West Divisional Police Headquarters that he returned home only to meet the corpses of three persons behind his house.

Manchester City manager donates 1m euros to fight coronavirus

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has donated 1m euros (£920,000) to fight the coronavirus outbreak in Spain.

Guardiola, who is at his home in Barcelona, has been working with his lawyers over the past few days to work out the best way of using the money.

It will go to a campaign being promoted by the Medical College of Barcelona and the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation.

Buhari Chief of staff, Abba Kyari tests positive for COVID-19

Abba Kyari, the chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, has tested positive for coronavirus days after returning from an official trip to Germany, it has been widely reported.

According to report, he ran a test on Saturday based on medical advice, although he was not exhibiting any symptoms.

The result came back on Monday positive and he has gone into isolation as the symptoms are yet to manifest.

Following his result, Buhari was also advised to run a test but he was negative.

Cameroon-born singer and saxophone player Manu Dibango has died from a coronavirus infection, according to a statement on his official Facebook page on Tuesday.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Manu Dibango, our Papy Groove, who passed away on 24th of March 2020, at 86 years old, further to covid 19,” it said.

New virus emerged in China, man dies after testing positive for Hantavirus

A man from China’s Yunnan province tested positive for Hantavirus on Monday. He died while on his way back to Shandong Province for work on a chartered bus, China’s Global Times reported. 32 other people have been tested, the report added.

Coronavirus: Seyi Makinde places ban on religious services, gatherings of over 30 people

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has announced the ban on social gatherings including religious services, weddings, parties, and burial ceremonies, saying such gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less.

He also directed nightclubs to remain closed. He said the new measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

The Governor made the pronouncements during a late Monday night broadcast at the state owned broadcasting outfit, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), a repeat of which was done on Tuesday morning.

Makinde said, he understands how this pandemic will affect the people socially, economically and spiritually, but that the measures are the sacrifices that must be made to preserve and protect the people.

Cross River female senator, Rose Oko, dies at 63

A Peoples Democratic Party member representing Cross River North Senatorial District in the National Assembly is dead.

One of her aides who confirmed on condition of anonymity in Abuja on Tuesday morning,  said the late Senator died on Monday at the age of 63.

He said the late Oko died last night in a hospital,  in the United Kingdom.

She was a second term member of the National Assembly and until her death, the chairman, Senate Committee on Trade and Investment.

Coronavirus cases in Tunisia rise to 89

The number of cases of coronavirus in Tunisia has risen to 89. A total of 14 new cases tested positive out of 126 tests.

Some 60 cases are of people who came from abroad and most cases, 29, are in the capital Tunis, where 11 coronavirus patients are in hospital.

More than 8,000 people are in self-quarantine.

Tunisia had already closed its borders and had been under curfew from 6 pm to 6 am local time

Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases hit 40 as 4 new infections confirmed

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has announced four new coronavirus infections in the country.

The announcement states that Nigeria’s COVID-19 infections now peak at 40.

The NCDC made the announcement via its verified Twitter handle @NCDCgov on Monday night.

Three of the cases are in Lagos State and one in the Federal Capital Territory.

Two of these cases are persons who returned to Nigeria from overseas, NCDC said.

Scientists fear GORILLAS can catch and die from coronavirus

Conservationists have warned that endangered species including Africa's mountain gorilla are at risk of contracting coronavirus.

The Virunga National Park in Congo, which is currently home to around one third of the world's mountain gorillas, has taken the decision to ban all visitors until June 1.

It cited 'advice from scientific experts indicating that primates, including mountain gorillas, are likely susceptible to complications arising from the COVID-19 virus.'

Primates are prone to many of the same respiratory illnesses that afflict humans.
